Up at dawn. Dark at four. Walls a cave. Night is day. Where’s the light? Fire sign. Fire sign. Deep orange and cerulean. Wind plus hail. Skipping leaves. Lightning looms. Fire sign. Fire sign. Fan the flame. Glow. Trip. Tumble. Float. Sway. Wind again. Fire sign. Carry me. Fire sign. Glow again. Fire sign. Quiet looking. Light is changing. Stop and stare. Fire sign. Look up! Look up! Fire sign. Sky is moving. Sky is falling? City’s still. Fire sign. Tuck me in. Warm me up. Fire sign. Fluoresce and glow. Fire sign. Heavy eyelids. Fire sign. Carry me. Fire sign. Hold my head so I can stare. Fire sign. Fire sign. Glow. Glow. Glow. Eyes closed. Eyes open. Fire sign.
Good Naked is pleased to present Fire Sign, a virtual exhibition curated by Jaqueline Cedar in collaboration with LADIES’ ROOM Los Angeles.
The works in this exhibition tilt toward darkness, warmed still with end of day light. Cool air is present and a sense of slight unrest remains as temperatures drop and movement subsides. Those present lean into the comfort of darkness and breathe deeply with relief at escape from transitional states. A longing remains for the beauty of before and all wrestle with anticipation of what comes next.
Lesley Wamsley paints en plain air, often racing shifts in light as hours pass and close looking continues. Her brushstrokes are quick and filled with gestured urgency as she moves to capture each moment of light and color passing over her observed locations.
Jamie Mirabella works decisively with a range of found images, forming new compositions as she cuts, overlays, and rearranges material to develop newly imagined environments. Movement is structured across these layered and textured surfaces.
Rachel Schmidhofer moves paint with fluidity and playfulness as she describes both imagined and familiar scenes of light and reverie.
Sarah Alice Moran develops narratives with figures and limbs as she forms relationships between creatures in their physical interactions and discovery of place.
Fire Sign works will be on view at ladiesroomla.org through January 15, 2022.
