Good Naked (Chicago IL) is pleased to present LUCKY NUMBER, a 4-person exhibition opening Saturday, October 5th from 4-9pm.
The works in this exhibition turn about an inventory of forms. Accumulations of shapes are assembled and oriented within a range of methodical and intuitive systems. Each artist moves toward an interior architecture as they layer and connect materials, discovering a final image via repetition and alteration. Louis Block paints in oil on linen, stretched over irregularly shaped ellipses. While non-representational, the paintings begin with images culled from photographs and memory. Block’s underlying sketches are layered with color often to a point of obfuscation. Texture and material shifts emerge in this process as he works additively and subtractively with brushes, rags, and sandpaper. Max Capus pulls imagery more directly from photography and these sources remain present as he rearranges their structures in grid-like patterns, muting color, and altering pictures with moments of painterly disruptions that amplify humor and absurdity in personal encounters made public. Anita Lim builds modular structures via repetition, adopting a factory-like process that is slowed and made tactile via her hand-made approach. Lim’s forms and their iterations begin with an inherent boundlessness that is edited in presentation via site-specific installation. Alizah Sage works in dye on stitched canvas and silk to create compositions that reference landscape and architecture as well as an interior and exterior self. Liminal shadows and tactility of forms create space for reflection and pause amongst dynamic textures.
LUCKY NUMBER will be on view October 4 - November 16, 2024.
